Night. After a whole day of wonder, of dropping and catching (see Hawk Drops), of reading in the tree with the wrong tool (see Hawk Reads), of stories told and stories heard, Hawk lies down beside the campfire and sleeps.
His head is tucked. His body glows in the firelight, warm gold against the deep blue of the forest.
The fireflies are still awake.
They didn't leave when the sun went down. They woke up and stayed, and now they hover close, as if picking dreams for their friends. That part wasn't in the plan. It arrived one night while I was painting, and I recognized it immediately. Of course the fireflies choose the dreams. Who else would?
The red glow on the tree trunk is the fire's memory of the day. The blue of the forest is the world holding still around them.
Sleep well, small friend. 🌷
