They packed up the tea (see Tea by the River). They found the canoe. Hawk took the helm this time, guiding, watching the river ahead. Squirrel took the oars. For once, he was doing the work. Which is only fair, if you think about last time (see Flight Over Firefly Meadow).
The river is full of lilypads. Pink flowers hang over the water. The music is still there, in the ripples. And a hummingbird arrived, a surprise visitor, hovering right beside them. She just showed up, the way the fireflies did before her, and I was all for it!
This painting has a real place in my heart. Years ago on the Platte River in Michigan, my husband, my two daughters, and friends, we floated for hours in tubes and kayaks. No rush. Just laughing, just together, just being held by the water.
And there in the background, grandmother and granddaughter, in their own canoe, laughing. Because of course they came along, they are making it happen after all.
