This is the very first painting in the Hawk & Squirrel world. It started with a small revenge.
My husband spends a lot of his time trying to keep real-life squirrels off our bird feeders. So in my first painting, I let Squirrel win. Here he is, riding on Hawk's back, flying above the meadow, heading straight for the feeder. Victory.
Hawk is wearing sunglasses and a top hat, his disguise. He looks a little like an owl, doesn't he? That was on purpose. A wink. A small mystery.
I planned all of that except for the fireflies, they came at the end. They weren't in the original vision. They just showed up on the canvas one day and said, we're here now. And of course Squirrel had to catch one.
If you look carefully in the background, there's a grandmother telling a story to her granddaughter. That grandmother appears in most of the paintings in this collection. Sometimes bigger, sometimes hidden. None of this world exists without her.
This is where it all began. The story being told. The world being born.
