This is Wings and Strings, from my Musical Series.
Hawk is dancing flamenco. Squirrel is playing the guitar. And they're in sync, the way friends are in sync when one is making music and the other is listening with the whole body. Because sometimes you don't listen to music with your ears. You listen with your ribs, your feet, your hips.
They both wanted to wear dresses. I said yes. I don't have a fixed story about who they are, maybe they're gender fluid, maybe they just wear whatever the music tells them to wear. Make up your own version. This is the kind of world where clothes don't decide anything.
The garden behind them is more abstract than in my earlier paintings, I wanted the background to breathe with the dance. So the flowers loosened up. The colors got more painterly.
Underneath everything, as always in this series, real sheet music is collaged into the first layers. It's what Squirrel is playing. It's what Hawk's body is hearing.
Look closely at the top right corner. Grandmother is there, in the purple petals, holding the whole scene as she is telling the story to her granddaughter. 🌷
