The Sunflower Serenade
This is Sunflower Serenade, from my Musical Series.
Squirrel is playing the recorder from the leaf of a sunflower. He picked out the hat himself. Hawk has just landed on his swing to listen. And down in front, tucked into the petals of the biggest sunflower, grandmother and granddaughter are sharing the story of the whole scene.
Every painting in my Musical Series starts with music. Literally. In the first layers, I collage real sheet music into the canvas. Notes. Bars. Fragments of songs. As I paint, some disappear under the layers, you can't always see them in the finished piece. But they're there. They're what Squirrel is playing. They're what Hawk hears.
This painting is a memory. Every summer growing up, I visited my grandmother in her garden. We talked, played, worked, welcomed her visitors. She told me stories, from her life, from the books she was reading. The words you can see in the sky and in the field are symbols of her voice. My voice. Their voices. All of it, layered under the paint.
You can't see the music. You can't hear the words. But somewhere, you feel her garden. 🌷
