This is The Smallest Trumpet, from my Musical Series.
Bear is back, playing the contrebasse, wearing a rose. Hawk is on saxophone up on the tree branch. And Squirrel? Squirrel wanted the trumpet.
The smallest character in the whole collection asked for the loudest instrument. Of course he did.
A trumpet player once told me, with love, that trumpet players can be a little obnoxious. Small, loud, hard to ignore. As soon as she said it, I thought: that's Squirrel. Absolutely. Give him the trumpet.
The garden behind them is more abstracted, as with the whole Musical Series. I wanted the sound to matter more than the setting. The trees lean into the music. The mushrooms hold the beat. And in the far background, grandmother is sitting on a bench by the water with her granddaughter, listening to the whole thing from a distance.
Underneath the paint, as always in this series, real sheet music is collaged in. It's what Bear is grounding. It's what Squirrel is trying to be louder than.
Small doesn't mean quiet. 🌷
