Bear joined them, this was her first appearance in the collection. Bear came to witness the stories and laugh with her friends.
The light reflects on their fur and their feathers. Squirrel is holding a scroll, as if he's reading the story of the day back to them. Maybe he is. Maybe every painting we've just seen is being told right now, by him, around this fire.
And in the background, grandmother and granddaughter, on a swing. Watching. Or telling and creating. It's hard to know which is which. Maybe they're the same. Maybe the story is being told BY the watching of it. Maybe the world is being created BY the telling of it.
That's what magical realism is, for me. The moment you can't tell where the story ends and the world begins.
