This is Ribbon of Songs, from my Musical Series.
I've always loved rhythmic gymnastics, the dancers with ribbons, the way one long piece of silk can carry a whole story. I wanted to paint that. But my dancers had to be a Hawk and a Squirrel.
Here, the ribbon IS the song. Hawk is caught up in it, gold streaming around him through pink clouds. Squirrel, in his green top hat, sits inside one of the loops with his violin. He's playing. Hawk is dancing. The ribbon carries both of them.
This painting is about the friendship. The way one long thread can hold two very different creatures. The way music makes that possible.
Down in the corner, grandmother and granddaughter are witnessing or creating the story from a flower.
Look closely. Underneath the ribbon, real sheet music is collaged into the canvas. It's the song. And the song is what makes the ribbon move.
One is playing. One is dancing. To the same song. 🌷
